Chinese Nobel laureate Mo Yan has announced the release of his new book Ren Na, inspired by his habit of watching short videos.
On Sunday evening, the writer shared the news on his Xiaohongshu account and revealed plans to host his livestreamed book launch.
Mo said he often loses track of time while scrolling through short videos, sometimes spending hours despite attempts to limit his usage.
According to Mo, this experience inspired his new book, a collection of 81 short pieces—some as brief as 200 words— designed for quick and engaging reading.
Described as his first notebook-style fiction collection, the book features concise, light, and entertaining stories intended to keep readers hooked in a way similar to short videos.
Online reactions quickly followed. Some users joked about how the same scrolling habit can lead to very different outcomes, while others said they were particularly drawn to a chapter titled The Ancestor of Yu Hua, referencing fellow writer Yu Hua. Some also speculated that the book's content could appear in future exam questions.
Despite crediting short videos as a source of inspiration, the author emphasized that he is still trying to cut down on his screen time.
