US rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine said he unexpectedly became a fellow inmate of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro while in custody, later showing off a SpongeBob doll signed by the leader after his release.

The rapper, whose real name is Daniel Hernandez, had been sentenced to prison in January for assaulting another person and for possessing MDMA and cocaine in his bedroom. He was released in the early hours of April 3 local time.

After leaving prison, Tekashi 6ix9ine posted a video on social media showing friends picking him up. In the footage, he appeared excited as he displayed a SpongeBob doll bearing Maduro's signature.

On Jan. 3, the US launched a large-scale operation against Venezuela, forcibly taking Maduro and his wife into custody and bringing them to the US. On Jan. 5, the couple made their first appearance at the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, where they rejected what the US described as "criminal" charges.

They are currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
