As the conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran enters its second month, the situation has been marked not only by ongoing attacks and escalating rhetoric, but also by indirect negotiations mediated through Pakistan.

Over the past weekend, talks were held in Islamabad, bringing together the foreign ministers of Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. The discussions focused on advancing US–Iran peace talks and finding ways to bring a swift end to the conflict in the Middle East.

The four countries reached a four-point consensus, including support for Pakistan's role in mediating between the US and Iran, and efforts to explore viable paths toward a lasting end to the regional war.

Various signs suggest that this war—one that arguably should never have occurred—is approaching its conclusion, or perhaps drifting into a disorderly and inconclusive endgame. No longer concerned with consequences or a graceful exit, Trump appears to have found a convenient pretext to withdraw troops.
