On April 2 local time, the Pentagon announced that Gen. Randy George, the 41st Chief of Staff of the United States Army, "will be retiring from his position effective immediately," according to Pentagon chief spokesperson Sean Parnell. The announcement came just hours after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth requested the Army's top uniformed officer to step down.

Hegseth reportedly wants a leader who can "carry out the Army in line with President Trump and Hegseth's vision," according to a source cited by CBS News. The ouster of George is the latest in a series of high-level Pentagon dismissals.

George, 61, was confirmed by the Senate in 2023 to the Army's highest-ranking post, a position normally held for a four-year term that would have lasted through 2027. A career infantry officer and West Point graduate, George previously served as senior military assistant to then-Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin during the Biden administration. Before becoming Army chief of staff, he served as vice chief of staff from 2022 to 2023.

The Pentagon's move was widely seen by U.S. media as another escalation of Hegseth's purge of top military brass, with George becoming the most senior uniformed officer to be removed amid the ongoing U.S. military operations against Iran.
