Lucie Chang Fine Arts is pleased to announce its participation in Art Basel Hong Kong 2026 from March 25 to 29, featuring the late contemporary artist Zhu Xinjian (1953-2014). This time will be the first to simultaneously showcase Zhu Xinjian's ink paintings and oil paintings on an international platform. Lucie Chang Fine Arts will prominently feature Zhu Xinjian's signature "The Beauties" and present a dialogue between his ink paintings and oil works.
As a leading figure of the "85 New Wave" and the "New Literati Painting" movement, Zhu Xinjian redefined the modernity of Chinese ink painting with his unrestrained brushwork and unflinching depictions of human nature, earning the critical acclaim of "Profane Illumination". His iconic "beauty paintings" and depictions of everyday life bridge the secular and the spiritual, influencing generations of Chinese artists.
In this exclusive interview with Zhu Xinjian's daughter, Catherine Zhu, we move beyond art historical critiques to explore the artist's life, creative journey, and the man behind the master, through the eyes of his closest family.
