FIFA President Gianni Infantino said on March 31, during a media interview in Turkey, where he was attending a friendly match between Iran and Costa Rica, that Iran will proceed with its World Cup plans in the US in June, despite the ongoing conflict between Iran and the US—one of the co-hosts of the tournament.
According to CCTV News, Infantino stated that he will do his best to support the Iranian team.
Under the match schedule, Iran will play all of its matches in Group G in the US. Two of those matches will be held in Los Angeles, and one will take place in Seattle.
The Iranian Football Federation has reportedly been working to move the team's three World Cup group-stage matches from the US to Mexico.
Previously, Iran's Ministry of Sport had banned the national team and club sports teams from traveling to countries it deems hostile until further notice. Mexico's President also said that, if FIFA agrees, Mexico could host Iran's matches at the 2026 World Cup.
Infantino said that Iran will take part in the World Cup and that the matches will be held in their originally scheduled locations according to the results of the draw.
