American golf star Tiger Woods said on March 31 that he will take time away from competitive golf to seek treatment and focus on his personal health, according to reports by AFP and other international media outlets.
Earlier, on March 27, Woods was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Later the same day, he was released on bail.
Investigators reportedly ruled out the possibility that Woods was driving under the influence of alcohol. He agreed to take a breath alcohol test, which showed that he was not driving while intoxicated by alcohol. Investigators believed he had been driving under the influence of drugs, but Woods refused to undergo a urine test.
In a statement posted on X on Tuesday, Woods said: "I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today. I'm stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery."
He added that he is "committed to taking the time needed" to return in a "healthier, stronger, and more focused" condition—both in his personal life and professional career.
Now 50 years old, Woods' arrest is the second time he has been taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. It is also the fourth time he has been involved in a vehicle-related incident.
