Starting April 1, taxis in Hong Kong are required to provide passengers with at least two electronic payment options, including one QR code-based payment method and one non-QR code payment method. Failure to comply without reasonable justification could result in a penalty of up to HK$5,000 and six months' imprisonment.

According to Assistant Commissioner for Transport Fung Wai-kwan, over 47,000 taxi drivers have already installed systems that support multiple e-payment platforms. For drivers who have yet to complete the installation, they can book appointments at designated service centers managed by the Transport Department (TD). These centers, operating until April 4, offer dedicated assistance to drivers, including account setup.

Passengers will be able to identify the taxi's available payment options via stickers displayed on taxi windows or by inquiring directly with the driver. Fung also advised passengers to check whether their selected payment platforms offer discounts or additional service charges.

The TD will continue public education and promotional efforts after the law takes effect. Fung encouraged passengers to report non-compliant taxi drivers by noting the date, time, license plate number, and driver details, and contacting the government hotline (1823) or the Transport Complaints Unit (2889 9999).
