Due to delays in the approval of funding for the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) by Congress, significant absenteeism among airport security personnel has disrupted operations at several airports across the US, causing passenger congestion. In response, Delta Air Lines announced on March 24 that it is temporarily suspending special services for US Congress Members, including airport transfers, VIP privileges, and seat upgrades.
Delta Air Lines stated that the partial federal government shutdown has strained resource allocation, making it increasingly difficult to prioritize both passengers and employees under the current circumstances.
The shutdown of the DHS stems from controversies around immigration enforcement policies, with the Democratic Party demanding improvements in enforcement measures before approving funding. While Republicans have proposed a divided funding solution that allocates resources unrelated to immigration enforcement in hopes of securing approval this week, Democrats insist that withholding funding alone is insufficient and demand simultaneous reforms to immigration enforcement policies.
