On March 21, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who is on a visit to the United States, posted a message stating, "I visited Arlington National Cemetery, and as the national anthems of Japan and the United States were played, I laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier." The Prime Minister's Office of Japan also released a video of Takaichi paying her respects at the cemetery. In the video, Takaichi stands with her hands pressed tightly against the seams of her trousers and bows deeply for over ten seconds.
It is understood that all American soldiers who died in overseas combat and whose remains could be repatriated are buried at Arlington National Cemetery, including a large number of US soldiers who perished in World War II.
