The Hong Kong Tourism Board had recently released its tourism outlook, forecasting 53.8 million visitor arrivals for the year, Rosanna Law, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, said this morning (March 21).
She also said her bureau would continue efforts to encourage overnight visitors to extend their stay in Hong Kong.
Law described this year as the "Year of the Asian Games" and expressed hope to host more national, Asian, or international competitions in individual sports in Hong Kong. This would provide Hong Kong athletes preparing for the Asian Games with opportunities to train on home ground and achieve good results, and attract more young people and young athletes to join the elite athlete ranks.
Meanwhile, major sports events could draw more visitors to Hong Kong and encourage them to stay longer. Law noted that although there are ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, Hong Kong is a very safe place with a wide variety of activities, making her confident in attracting visitors, especially overnight visitors to Hong Kong.
Law also stated that the government strongly supports emerging activities and provides funding for some local sports projects. Even if these projects do not meet the "M Mark" level, as long as they involve international participation, the SAR government offers grants to help spark public interest in emerging activities.
