Dominic Lee, a member of Hong Kong's Legislative Council, pushed back against Western criticism of the Hong Kong National Security Law at the United Nations Human Rights Council on Wednesday (March 18).

Lee addressed the 61st regular session, asserting that since the law's enactment in 2020, "Hong Kong's economy has recovered, tourism has flourished, and people finally feel safe again."

Lee directly challenged Western nations that had condemned and sanctioned China over the legislation. He questioned the moral standing of the United States, which he described as "a country ruled by the Epsteins," and the United Kingdom, which he noted had arrested thousands of its own citizens for online speech.

"What moral authority do NATO countries, that preach human rights in this very chamber while turning a blind eye to the Zionist genocide in Gaza, have to tell us what justice looks like?" Lee asked.

The legislator accused some nations of treating "human rights as bargaining chips" and "a tool of foreign policy," while their "own hands are stained with the blood of Palestinians and Iranians they choose to forget."

Lee concluded by calling for consistent standards across all nations, stating: "We will not rest until hypocrisy crumbles, genocide is met with action, and peace is no longer a word we speak but a world we build."
