Speaking to reporters this morning (March 17) before the Executive Council meeting, Chief Executive John Lee addressed the aftermath of the Wang Fuk Court fire, stating that while authorities understand residents' desire to retrieve personal belongings and hope to facilitate this as soon as possible, the process must be conducted in an orderly manner to ensure safety.
Lee explained that many units at Wang Fuk Court have been severely damaged, and the estate currently lacks electricity, water supply, and elevator service. "This is not as simple as returning to your home under normal circumstances," he emphasized, noting that the entire process requires careful sequencing.
The Chief Executive outlined various factors needing consideration, including how to arrange the order for different residents, how to assist and accommodate those requiring support who wish to return personally, and how to help residents who need to remove larger quantities of belongings. He also noted potential safety hazards in the estate's stairwells that must be addressed.
Lee stressed that completing these arrangements as quickly as possible is a priority and has instructed relevant departments to prepare adequate personnel and provide clear guidance to residents. He expressed hope that arrangements could be announced within the next month, allowing residents to return to their units by April.
