Today (March 12), the 14th National People's Congress, China's national legislature, held the closing meeting of its fourth session.
Xi Jinping and other Party and state leaders attended the meeting at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Chinese lawmakers passed a resolution on the government work report, approved the outline of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) for national economic and social development, voted to adopt the Ecological and Environmental Code, the Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law, and the National Development Planning Law.
Lawmakers approved resolutions endorsing the 2025 implementation and 2026 plan for national economic and social development, while also approving the 2026 central budget and related budgetary reports. They passed resolutions accepting the work reports of the NPC Standing Committee, the Supreme People's Court, and the Supreme People's Procuratorate.
Furthermore, they adopted a decision approving the report on the overhaul of laws and the proposed handling of certain laws and decisions.
And with that, the Two Sessions 2026 have successfully concluded. Looking back, one defining characteristic stood out throughout this year's gathering: "renewal." From the widely discussed topic of ecological protection to the future-oriented advancements in science and technology, the agenda not only kept pace with the times but was also imbued with a vibrant, youthful energy. This fully demonstrates our nation's unwavering commitment to deepening reform, advancing with the times, and striding towards a higher stage of development.
Looking at the three highly anticipated press conferences on the economy, people's livelihoods, and foreign affairs (diplomacy), we witnessed a powerful combination of grand vision and concrete action. Protecting vulnerable groups (the elderly, persons with disabilities, etc.), cracking down on corruption and serious crimes, and providing stability to a turbulent world are all aimed at "making it better." A wealth of detailed data and specific examples not only showcased the remarkable achievements of the past year but also clearly outlined the path forward, transforming high-level policies into something tangible and accessible.
Seeking truth from facts remains the cornerstone of all our endeavors. Standing at a new starting point, our nation is advancing with firm strides along this path, full of confidence and momentum.
