The 2026 Two Sessions are underway in Beijing. We invited Hong Kong Deputy to the National People's Congress Iris Wong to unpack a key term from this year's meetings: the Ecological and Environmental Code.
Wong described the code as a "super rule book for nature." She explained that instead of keeping many separate laws, China is integrating them into one comprehensive code covering pollution control, ecosystem protection, and green, low-carbon development.
"This reflects a strong commitment to our shared future," Wong said. "The message is clear: China values economic growth, but equally, it values protecting the planet. By unifying these rules, the country is working toward truly sustainable development."
