China-Russia relations remain 'as steady as rock' despite test of winds, rains: FM. (DDN)

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, attends a press conference on China's foreign policy and external relations on the sidelines of the fourth session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC) in Beijing, capital of China, March 8, 2026. At the meeting, Wang Yi stated that in the face of a turbulent and changing international landscape, China-Russia relations remain as steady as a rock despite the test of winds and rains."

Wang Yi noted that this year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination and the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation between China and Russia. "In the face of a turbulent and changing international landscape, the China-Russia relationship has stood strong as a mountain despite the winds and rains. Why has it reached such a state? I believe the main reason is that, from the very beginning, the China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination has been built on a foundation of equality, respect, and mutual benefit. It reflects the essence of a new type of international relations and represents the direction for a new type of major-country relations."

Wang Yi stated that China and Russia are strategically independent. "We always respect each other's core interests, do not impose our will or agenda on the other, and adhere to the principles of non-alliance, non-confrontation, and not targeting any third party." He added that the two countries enjoy a high degree of mutual political trust. "Standing back-to-back is an essential feature of our relations. We are not afraid of any external provocation or pressure and possess strong strategic resilience." Wang Yi also emphasized their close coordination in action. "On major international and regional affairs, China and Russia share the most strategic consensus and engage in the closest strategic coordination, including on issues of upholding international rules and order."

Wang Yi pointed out that the post-World War II international order, after 80 years of trials, has once again arrived at a critical juncture. "Last year, the Presidents of China and Russia attended each other's commemorations of the victory in the anti-fascist war. The two sides issued three significant joint statements on deepening comprehensive strategic coordination, consolidating global strategic stability, and upholding the authority of international law. Together, we sent a clear signal to the world: we must resolutely uphold the correct view of WWII history, defend the fruits of the WWII victory, and oppose acts of unilateral bullying and hegemonism." He concluded, "80 years ago, we made a 'China-Russia contribution' to the creation of the post-war order. Today, 80 years later, we will inject 'China-Russia energy' into welcoming the arrival of a multipolar world."
