The 14th National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, opened its fourth session on Thursday morning (March 5) at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Before the session, Deputy to the 14th NPC from HKSAR Ling Yu-shih, who was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, gave an exclusive interview to reporters from DotDotNews. She called on young people in Taiwan to aspire to become proud and upright Chinese citizens.
Ling stated that young people in Taiwan and abroad lack opportunities to engage with traditional Chinese culture or to receive education in Chinese language and classical studies. She noted that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)'s "Taiwan independence" activities have deprived young people of their aspirations and correct values.
Meanwhile, overseas Chinese communities also hope that their next generations can revive the patriotic and hometown-loving traditions. Ling stressed that young people in Taiwan and abroad must first set their ambitions on becoming proud and upright Chinese citizens, work to understand their country, build closeness to it, and become an integral part of it.
