According to reports from Xinhua and CCTV News citing Iranian media on March 1, Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in an attack.

Ali Khamenei was born in 1939 in Mashhad, Iran. He served as Iran's president from 1981 to 1989 and has been the country's supreme leader since 1989. In June 1981 he survived a targeted assassination attempt that left his right arm paralyzed.

Iran announced a 40-day period of national mourning beginning on March 1 local time.

On Feb. 28 local time, the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran that killed at least 201 people and wounded 747. Earlier Iranian media reports said that on March 1 local time, sources close to the supreme leader's residence confirmed the deaths of Khamenei's daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter. It was also reported that one of Khamenei's daughters-in-law was killed in the morning attack on Feb. 28.
