Speaking at a press conference on Budget-related measures today (Feb 27), Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law revealed that visitor arrivals are projected to reach 53.8 million this year, an 8 percent increase from 2025. She stressed the focus is on "quality" rather than "quantity" of tourists.
When asked about mainland campers during the Golden Week who did not spend much, Law responded that "eco-tourism" remains a key development area given Hong Kong's rich island and country park resources. "We cannot say hiking or camping is not helpful to Hong Kong," she said, emphasizing the need to find ways to encourage more spending. She reminded that countryside visitors must strictly comply with local laws, and enforcement action will be taken against any violations.
Regarding film development funding, Law noted the government currently provides various support through the Film Development Fund, including subsidies for screenwriters, projects promoting Chinese culture, and assistance for location shooting in Hong Kong. The revamped Yau Ma Tei Police Station exhibition, incorporating elements from the "Kowloon Walled City" film, has successfully boosted visitor interest in Hong Kong cinema.
Acknowledging industry feedback on expanding markets, Law said the government recognizes post-pandemic changes in viewing habits and competition from streaming platforms, where "only blockbusters draw audiences to cinemas." She added that authorities will review whether current support for emerging talent is adequate, maintaining "good and smooth communication with the industry and providing all necessary assistance."
