K-pop star G-DRAGON (Kwon Ji-Yong) recently attended the "Krazy Super Concert" in Dubai during the Chinese New Year period. On stage, he wished the audience a "Lunar New Year" in English, but the clip sparked controversy on Chinese social media after it was circulated.
Also performing at the concert was Chinese artist Cai Xukun, who used "Chinese New Year" to greet the audience in English and also said "新年快樂" in Chinese. Netizens compared the two artists' different English word choices; some Chinese users questioned GD's wording as "insufficiently respectful" and even escalated the dispute to accusations of "insulting China," causing the topic to spread rapidly.
However, many Chinese fans defended GD, saying that as a Korean, his use of "Lunar New Year" is a common international expression and was not inappropriate.
