Days before the Lunar New Year, Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee visited residents at the Prosperous Garden estate in Yau Ma Tei today (Feb. 13) to learn more about the living conditions of grassroots families and elderly citizens. During the visit, Lee sang the classic festive song "Ying Chun Hua" with a group of elders to celebrate the upcoming Year of the Horse.
Locals and tourists who happened to meet Lee during his community tour described the encounter as both a "surprise" and "thrilling."
Lee also visited the Yaumatei Multi-service Centre for Senior Citizens. One of the residents, affectionately known as "Uncle Kwan," sang alongside the Chief Executive. "It was such an honour," Uncle Kwan said. "I told him I hope he can 'ride the winds and waves' and he wished me good health."
Resident Ms. Tsui said she was "very excited" to meet the Chief Executive. "I never expected him to come in person to Yau Ma Tei," she said. Having lived in the district for over a decade, Ms. Tsui noted how the area has grown livelier in recent years thanks to Hong Kong's tourism development. "Yau Ma Tei has become one of the city's well-known tourist spots," she added.
Ms. Zhang, a tourist from Shenyang, was visiting with her son when they unexpectedly ran into Lee. Overjoyed and excited, the pair decided to follow the Chief Executive's footsteps and tour the Yau Ma Tei area. Earlier today, Lee expressed his hope that "tourists will have a great time in Hong Kong." Responding to his words, Ms. Zhang said, "Hong Kong is really interesting, and the food is delicious. We'll definitely come back to visit!"
