Jimmy Lai, accused of involvement in anti-government activities, is scheduled to be sentenced today (Feb 9) at 10 AM at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts, which is temporarily serving as the High Court. Lai, along with eight co-defendants who have pleaded guilty, is facing sentencing that may take approximately one hour. Under the current law, the maximum penalty for the charges involved is life imprisonment.
In December 2025, the High Court convicted Lai on two counts of "conspiracy to collude with foreign forces" and one count of "conspiracy to publish seditious materials. " The High Court also found three companies affiliated with Apple Daily guilty of conspiring to collude with foreign forces and publishing seditious publications.
This marks the first sentencing under the National Security Law in Hong Kong for the offense of collusion with foreign forces, making it a landmark case in the city's legal history under the new security legislation.
