At the 2026 Spring Festival Reception hosted by the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Hong Kong, Zhou Ji, the Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, in his speech, praised the accomplishments achieved under the leadership of President Xi Jinping. He highlighted the successful completion of the 14th Five-Year Plan, noting that China's economy had exceeded RMB 140 trillion. He cited significant advances in innovation, particularly in technology such as AI, and a vibrant cultural landscape, with Chinese cultural icons gaining global attention.
Zhou also reflected on Hong Kong's economic revival, reporting a GDP growth rate of 3.5% and its notable position as the world leader in IPO fundraising. The development of the Northern Metropolis and the opening of Hetao Hong Kong Park were emphasized as pivotal steps in enhancing the region's economic strength. Improvements in public welfare, such as reduced waiting times for public housing and enhanced healthcare services, were highlighted, demonstrating a commitment to improving residents' lives.
Zhou underscored the importance of national sovereignty and security, commending the community's collaborative efforts in maintaining social stability and harmony. He acknowledged the successes in democratic processes, including the Eighth Legislative Council election, which saw active participation from voters of all ages.
Looking ahead, Zhou expressed confidence that Hong Kong would continue to uphold the "One Country, Two Systems" principle and actively engage with national development plans. He affirmed that the new Legislative Council would support the government while ensuring effective oversight, promoting harmonious interactions between the executive and legislative branches.
