Secretary for Security Chris Tang earlier stated in the Legislative Council that some individuals had exploited the Wang Fuk Court fire incident to engage in "soft resistance," spreading false information to incite public discontent. Additionally, some have conducted illegal training overseas in an attempt to endanger Hong Kong and national security.

In a radio program today (Feb. 1), Tang reiterated that external forces continue to seek to influence Hong Kong and thereby threaten national security. On the other hand, domestic terrorism remains a persistent threat. Since its launch in November 2020, the National Security Reporting Hotline has received over 1.1 million messages, which have contributed to solving numerous cases.

Tang pointed out that due to geopolitical factors, certain external forces still aim to influence Hong Kong or use Hong Kong to affect the nation, including proposing sanctions or intimidating local judges while making false allegations. He again referenced the Jimmy Lai case, noting that some foreign politicians claimed Lai was forced into solitary confinement, whereas in fact, Lai had requested it himself. He also emphasized that domestic terrorism remains a concern, with "soft resistance" posing a significant threat. Some individuals exploit livelihood issues by spreading false information to incite public dissatisfaction toward the government, and he urged citizens to think critically and listen to the government's explanations.

Tang stated that the Security Bureau will continue to enhance intelligence gathering to safeguard national security. He mentioned that the National Security Reporting Hotline has received over 1.1 million messages, and while not all can be followed up on, the intelligence has aided in solving many cases.
