According to CCTV News, Nie Weiping, honorary president of the Chinese Weiqi Association, has passed away at the age of 74.
Nie, a 9-dan professional Go player, was one of the most iconic figures in China's Go community and had served as the head coach of the national Go team. For many years, he actively participated in promoting and popularizing the game of Go.
Nie was a pivotal figure in the revitalization of Chinese Go during the 1980s. In the China-Japan Go Tournament, as the anchor player for the Chinese team, he turned the tide of the competition with a series of stunning victories, defeating multiple top-tier Japanese players. His extraordinary achievements earned him the title of "Go Sage".
