On Sunday (Jan. 12), Hong Kong, China's men's foil team clinched gold at the Fencing World Cup in Paris, defeating the United States 45-38 in a closely contested final.

The team, featuring two-time Olympic gold medalist Edgar Cheung, reigning world champion Ryan Choi, Cheng Tit-nam, and Mike Lam, overcame their world number two opponents to secure their first team gold of the 2025-26 season, which began last November.

The SAR reached the final after defeating Qatar, Poland, the neutral-flagged Russian delegation, and Japan.

Despite early nerves that saw Hong Kong fall behind 4-10 in the gold medal match, they quickly recovered, with both teams exchanging leads. Hong Kong managed a narrow 40-38 lead entering the final round.

In a rematch from the individual foil final the previous day, Choi exacted revenge on Alexander Massialas, defeating the American 5-0 to secure the victory for Hong Kong, finalizing the score at 45-38.

This victory marked Hong Kong's second foil team gold at the World Cup, having previously triumphed on home ground in 2024. It also represented their best performance this season, following a fifth-place finish in Spain and a 13th-place result in Japan.
