According to a January 9 report from CCTV, Apple Inc. is currently accelerating the selection process for a successor to CEO Tim Cook. Among numerous candidates, John Ternus, the company's current Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, has emerged as the frontrunner.

Ternus, a native of California, holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. Before joining Apple, he worked as a mechanical engineer at Virtual Research Systems.

Ternus joined Apple's Product Design team in 2001. During his tenure, he has overseen the hardware engineering for several groundbreaking products, leading hardware engineering teams responsible for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, AirPods, and managing the hardware divisions of Apple's Vision Products Group (VPG) and the robotics development team.

At 50 years old, Ternus is one of the younger members of Apple's leadership team. His scope of work aligns closely with Apple's current priorities, such as cost control, supply reliability, and the incremental evolution of its platforms, making him a strong candidate for the next CEO.

Multiple sources within Apple describe Ternus as mild-mannered, steady, and a good collaborator.

Besides Ternus, media reports suggest Cook is also considering other candidates simultaneously. Apple has not yet announced a specific successor or a timeline for the leadership transition.

Media reports indicate that Cook, now 65, previously told the company's management that he feels fatigued and wishes to reduce his workload. It is anticipated that he may step down from the CEO role as early as this year and could potentially assume the position of Chairman of Apple's Board of Directors in the future.
