Travelers planning to fly or travel overseas next year should take note: multiple airlines operating routes to and from Hong Kong, including Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong Airlines, EVA Air, and United Airlines, will raise fuel surcharges starting the day after tomorrow (Jan. 1). Passengers purchasing tickets on or after Jan. 1 will face higher additional fees.

Taking Cathay Pacific as an example, for tickets departing from Hong Kong, the one-way fuel surcharge for short-haul flights will increase from HK$142 to HK$191, an additional HK$49 per leg, meaning a round-trip increase of HK$98. The one-way fuel surcharge for long-haul flights will rise from HK$569 to HK$767, an additional HK$198 per leg, resulting in a total round-trip increase of HK$396.

Other airlines have also announced new fuel surcharges. For Hong Kong Airlines flights departing from Hong Kong, the fuel surcharge for mainland China routes is HK$185; for routes to Taiwan, Japan, Thailand, and similar destinations, it is HK$211; and for long-haul routes such as North America, the surcharge is as high as HK$787.

EVA Air's fuel surcharge for round-trip flights between Hong Kong and Taiwan is HK$191, while round-trip flights from Taiwan to destinations like the Americas and Europe incur a surcharge of HK$576. United Airlines' fuel surcharge for round-trip flights between Hong Kong and Bangkok or Ho Chi Minh City is HK$191, whereas routes to the United States carry a surcharge of HK$767.

These adjustments will directly increase travel costs for passengers. For example, on a long-haul round-trip journey, the fuel surcharge alone could increase by nearly HK$400. As airlines generally calculate surcharges based on the ticket issuance date, it is recommended that travelers with confirmed plans aim to purchase and issue their tickets by Dec. 31, 2025, to take advantage of the current lower rates and effectively manage travel expenses.
