The "Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles" (SBT) policy officially came into effect at midnight today (Dec. 23), allowing eligible vehicles from Guangdong Province to enter Hong Kong's urban areas, with a daily quota of 100 slots. Secretary for Transport and Logistics, Mable Chan, stated that the Transport Department has already received over 1,000 applications for the scheme.
Chan noted that early this morning, the first batch of Guangdong vehicles entered Hong Kong's urban areas, with visibly excited owners arriving mainly for tourism and business activities. She mentioned that the border inspection process for vehicles passing through the Hong Kong Port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is highly efficient, taking only a few minutes to complete, reflecting the effective cooperation between Guangdong and Hong Kong. She expressed hope that the policy would further promote mutual exchanges between the two regions, bringing economic vitality to Hong Kong while shortening travel time and bringing residents closer together.
Chan emphasized the importance of charging facilities for electric vehicles, stating that relevant infrastructure will continue to be improved. She also encouraged "southbound" vehicles to park at hotels, theme parks, or exhibition venues before switching to public transport to explore various parts of Hong Kong. Additionally, Chan mentioned that if vehicle owners or drivers violate traffic regulations while in Hong Kong or fail to comply with relevant management rules, their eligibility for the scheme may be temporarily suspended to ensure the orderly implementation of the policy.
