The oath-taking ceremony for members of the 8th-term Legislative Council (LegCo) will be held on January 1, 2026 (Thursday), at 11:00 AM in the Legislative Council Complex Chamber, the Hong Kong government announced today.
Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu will administer the oath for the newly elected lawmakers.
The oath is legally binding, and all members are required to sincerely uphold and strictly abide by the statutory oath. According to the government, any false declaration or conduct in breach of the oath after it is taken may result in legal consequences.
The government will publish a list of legislators whose oaths confirm their validity after the ceremony.
The oath-taking process follows the Oaths and Declarations Ordinance (Cap. 11), updated by the 2021 Public Offices (Candidacy and Taking Up Offices) (Miscellaneous Amendments) Ordinance, which allows the Chief Executive or a designated person to oversee the oath.
