President Xi Jinping on Tuesday met with Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) John Lee, who is on a duty visit to Beijing. During the meeting, Xi heard a report from Lee on Hong Kong's current situation and the HKSAR government's work. Xi said that the central authorities fully recognized the work of Lee and the HKSAR government.
The fourth plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China stressed the importance of resolutely implementing the "one country, two systems" policy, under which the people of Hong Kong administer Hong Kong with a high degree of autonomy, and promote the long-term prosperity and stability in Hong Kong, Xi noted.
He called on the HKSAR government to align actively with the national 15th Five-Year Plan, uphold and improve its executive-led government, promote high-quality economic development, and extensively participate in the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, so that Hong Kong integrates into and serves the overall national development in an improved manner.
Secretary for Administration Eric Chan thanked Xi for his strong support and guidance, emphasizing that the central government has always been Hong Kong's most reliable backing. He highlighted the importance of aligning with key initiatives in the "15th Five-Year Plan," such as strengthening education, technology, and talent development, and enhancing collaboration within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Chan also acknowledged the central government's assistance and coordination during recent emergencies, stressing the need for all government departments to support the independent committee overseeing investigations.
Financial Secretary Paul Chan expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating that it motivates the government to continue improving. He reaffirmed Hong Kong's commitment to leveraging its unique "one country, two systems" advantage for high-quality development.
Secretary for Justice Paul Lam noted that Xi's acknowledgment is a significant encouragement. He mentioned the need to enhance the legal framework to support Hong Kong's role as an international center for legal services and dispute resolution, reinforcing the city's high-level legal system in alignment with national policies.
