Jimmy Lai, the founder of Next Digital, along with three companies affiliated with Apple Daily, faced charges of conspiring to collude with foreign forces. The trial lasted 156 days and concluded yesterday (Dec. 15) at 10 am in the West Kowloon Magistrates' Court (acting as the High Court), presided over by a panel of three National Security Law-designated judges: Madam Justice Esther Toh, Judge Susana Maria D'Almada Remedios, and Justice Alex Lee. The judges found Lai guilty of two counts of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces and one count of conspiracy to publish seditious publications, resulting in a conviction on all three charges.
In fact, earlier this year, a so-called "biography" glorifying Lai was published, which mentioned that "Lai nurtured this movement through mass media, not to mention the financial support," and that "his newspapers and magazines incited hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of protesters to take to the streets." This clearly demonstrates Lai's long-standing harm to Hong Kong and that he has gotten what he deserves.
