According to a report by CCTV News, US President Donald Trump stated on Dec. 15 (local time) that he may file a lawsuit against the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) later that afternoon or on the morning of Dec. 16.
On Nov. 14, while aboard the presidential aircraft Air Force One en route to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Trump told reporters, "We will sue them (BBC), seeking damages between US$1 billion and US$5 billion."
The controversy stems from excerpts of an internal BBC memo exposed on Nov. 3. The memo revealed that the Panorama program, in its documentary "Trump: A Second Chance?" aired last year, spliced two segments of Trump's speeches together, creating the impression that Trump appeared to be inciting his supporters to participate in the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot. The misleading editing sparked significant public debate.
On Nov. 10, Trump's legal team demanded that the BBC retract the documentary and issue an apology, threatening legal action with a claim of at least US$1 billion in damages if their demands were not met. On Nov. 13, the BBC apologized to Trump for the misleading editing but rejected the compensation demand put forward by his team.
