The 8th Legislative Council election was successfully held on Dec. 7. Many political figures noted that the new council comprises both seasoned veterans with extensive experience and newcomers elected for the first time from various professional fields. It is believed that such a blend of experience and fresh perspectives will inject new ideas and momentum into the LegCo.

It is hoped that the new council will prioritize advancing post-disaster reconstruction in Tai Po and improving disaster prevention regulations, while also focusing on major issues such as economic development, people's livelihood improvement, and social harmony. This will help drive the government to enhance governance efficiency in accordance with the law and promote the transformation of Hong Kong's economy and the diversification of its industries.

Prioritizing post-disaster reconstruction and disaster prevention

Leung Chun-ying, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), extended his congratulations to all elected members of the LegCo on social media. He expressed hope that the new LegCo would fulfill its duties in accordance with the Basic Law and prioritize addressing the issues and follow-up work exposed by the recent fire at Wang Fuk Court. At the same time, he urged the council to contribute ideas and strategies for Hong Kong's overall and long-term development.

Li Man-bun, vice chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC Social and Legal Affairs Committee and Co-CEO of Bank of East Asia, noted that the new LegCo demonstrates broad representation and balanced participation. Its members average 50.9 years old, blending experienced veterans with promising newcomers—all patriotic, capable, and devoted to HK. He urged the LegCo to promptly assume office and support the SAR government in post-disaster reconstruction, institutional reform, and housing safety enhancement. Li stressed that lawmakers should not only help improve governance efficiency but also drive Hong Kong's economic transformation and industrial diversification. The LegCo must work diligently for the well-being of Hong Kong citizens, strengthen the city's role as an international financial hub, and better integrate into national development.

Giving full play to the "one country, two systems" advantage

Kennedy Wong Ying-ho, HK deputy to the National People's Congress(NPC), stressed that advancing HK from governance to prosperity is a key mandate for the new LegCo. They should support the SAR government in addressing the aftermath of the Wang Fuk Court fire, including investigating its causes and strengthening systemic safeguards. The LegCo must also focus on driving economic growth, improving people's livelihoods, and maintaining social harmony, while fully leveraging HK's distinctive advantages under "one country, two systems." Aligning with the national 15th Five-Year Plan will further integrate HK into the country's overall development.

SIN Hendrick, an NPC deputy and head of the Internet Professional Association, described the new LegCo election as another success of HK's enhanced electoral system. The diverse membership—combining seasoned veterans with fresh talent from various sectors—brings new ideas and energy to the council. He expressed confidence that the new members will stay true to their commitment to the nation and HK, uphold national sovereignty, security, and development interests, and fully back the Chief Executive and SAR government in lawful governance. With professionalism and integrity, they will help Hong Kong align with the 15th Five-Year Plan, seize new opportunities amid changes, and remain people-centered—ensuring legislation improves lives and promotes equity.

Advancing policy implementation with a pragmatic approach

Wong Ping-fan, an HK deputy to the NPC, stated that the smooth conduct of this election and the genuine expression of public sentiment convey three clear messages to society. First, the democratic practice in the HK Special Administrative Region currently enjoys a solid foundation of public support. The electoral system effectively safeguards citizens' rights to participation and expression. Second, social cohesion serves as a crucial pillar for HK's development, as citizens' love for their home and commitment to unity can be transformed into powerful positive energy that drives social progress and overcomes various challenges. Third, governance efficacy is closely linked to public sentiment. Only by consistently addressing people's needs and responding to their expectations can the government earn their enduring trust and support, thereby achieving long-term social stability and development.

Shu Xin, a member of the National Committee of the CPPCC and chairman of the New Territories Concern Group, expressed his hope that all members will uphold the fundamental principle of "patriots governing Hong Kong" and embrace the responsibility of "governing HK with competence and integrity." He emphasized the priority of advancing post-disaster reconstruction in Tai Po and improving disaster prevention regulations, as well as earnestly addressing the urgent demands of citizens in areas such as housing, employment, and youth development. He also looks forward to members leveraging their professional expertise and fostering constructive interaction with the government. While strictly fulfilling their legislative and oversight functions, members should adopt a pragmatic approach to ensure policies are effectively implemented. This will enable the LegCo to serve as a solid bridge connecting the government and the public, repaying the trust of voters through tangible achievements.
