A new poll released on Thursday (Dec. 4) by the French polling agency Cluster17, covering nine European countries, reveals that nearly half of European citizens view U.S. President Donald Trump as an enemy of Europe. The poll also indicates widespread public concern about the potential for conflict with Russia, with nearly 70% of respondents fearing their countries would be unable to defend themselves if such a conflict were to erupt.
The survey, conducted between Nov. 22 and 28 of last month, polled nearly 10,000 local voters across France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Croatia. The results show that as many as 48% of respondents regard Trump as an enemy. However, when asked about the stance the European Union should adopt toward the U.S. government, the most popular option was "compromise," with 48% supporting this approach.
The poll also found that 51% of respondents believe the risk of conflict between the EU and Russia in the coming years is high, while 18% consider the risk extremely high. In Poland, Ukraine's neighboring country, 77% of respondents believe it is highly likely that the EU will clash with Russia. Additionally, a significant 69% of respondents expressed little to no confidence in their own country's military capabilities, doubting their ability to effectively handle a potential conflict with Russia.
The founder of Cluster17 and a French political science professor, noted that the poll illustrates how Trumpism is perceived as a hostile force across Europe. He emphasized that Europe's geopolitical environment is transforming, with many Europeans acutely aware of their own vulnerability.
