More than 200 animals have been rescued from the scene of a major fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, which broke out on Nov. 26, claiming human lives and causing significant animal casualties. The Hong Kong Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) provided updated figures in a social media post early today (Dec. 1).
In a 24-hour window from 11 pm Saturday (Nov. 29) to 11 pm Sunday (Nov. 30), firefighters extracted 91 animals from the fire-affected blocks. Of these, 73 survived, including 11 cats, 3 dogs, 48 fish, 2 rodents, and 9 turtles. Tragically, 18 animals did not survive this latest rescue phase.
According to earlier SPCA announcements, by 10:55 pm on Nov. 29, the society had assisted firefighters in handling 136 surviving animals and 45 deceased animals. Combining the figures, the total number of animals retrieved from the disaster site now exceeds 200.
The five-alarm fire on Nov. 26 resulted in severe human casualties and left over a hundred pets injured or dead. Rescue efforts for animals, conducted jointly by firefighters and the SPCA, have continued for days amidst the complex and hazardous conditions of the fire-damaged estate.
