On Nov. 26, a No. 5 fire broke out at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, quickly spreading along the scaffolding outside the building, resulting in many fatalities. This has raised significant concern in society regarding the fire resistance of scaffolding nets used at construction sites and during renovation projects. Our reporters conducted a real-world test today (Nov. 28) to assess the flame-retardant properties of commonly available scaffolding nets on the market, specifically comparing two types: green flame-retardant nets and regular white nets.

Using the same lighter and fire source, the reporters burned both types of nets for several seconds and observed the combustion behavior. The results showed a clear difference: the green net on the right side in the footage did not allow the flames to spread after the fire source was removed, only showing slight charring at the initial ignition point before extinguishing itself with minimal dripping material, thus meeting flame-retardant requirements. In contrast, the white regular net on the left caught fire almost instantly upon exposure to open flames, with the fire spreading along the net surface and producing burning droplets, leading to a more uncontrolled fire situation.
