Recently, a viral social media post claimed that joining Three Squirrels — the popular Chinese snack brand — means giving up your real name and adopting a work nickname starting with "Shu", the Chinese character for "mouse."
The user even posted photos from a company meeting — each seat had a name tag beginning with "Shu." That was enough to stir up a heated debate online.
Reactions were split. Some netizens thought it was adorable: "This 'mouse-style' nickname culture is so cute! Don't overthink it." Others added, "I actually prefer using a work alias — I'm not comfortable with colleagues calling me by my real name."
But not everyone was on board. One user said, "I'm a bit older — I just can't get into this new trend." Another argued, "Squirrels and mice aren't the same — why are we being tied to the word 'mouse'?" Still, most people agreed on one thing: "As long as it's voluntary and clearly communicated before joining, it's fine — the choice should be yours."
On November 24, a Three Squirrels representative clarified: "The nicknames are completely optional. They're just meant to create a friendly atmosphere and reflect our brand. No pressure, and no consequences if you don't use one."
Founder Zhang Liaoyuan also weighed in, saying: "Any nickname culture that employees enjoy — and that aligns with our values — is something we welcome."
Lawyer Yang Min pointed out that many companies, such as Alibaba and Tencent, use fun nicknames to foster team spirit. "As long as it's voluntary and respects employee rights, it's legal. But if it's forced, it could violate personal dignity."
