Chief Executive John Lee stated today (Nov. 26) on his social media page that he attended the opening ceremony of the 2025 International Railway Safety Council (IRSC) Annual Conference this morning. The theme of the conference is "Advancing Railway Safety through Innovation and Cooperation." This marks the second time Hong Kong has hosted this prestigious event since 2017, attracting over 300 industry elites from more than 30 countries and regions.
Lee expressed that with the acceleration of urbanization and growing public transport demand, expectations for speed, sustainability, and service quality continue to rise. Safety remains the cornerstone of public trust and the foundation of railway operations. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government has been collaborating with the MTR Corporation Limited, one of the world's safest and most reliable railway operators, to research, develop, and apply innovative technologies to enhance railway operational efficiency and safety.
Furthermore, Lee noted that since 2018, Hong Kong has been seamlessly connected to the mainland's high-speed rail network, creating new opportunities for tourism, trade, and economic integration, while consolidating Hong Kong's status as a regional logistics and transport hub. The Greater Bay Area is crucial for Hong Kong's future development and is a key factor in promoting deeper integration between Hong Kong and the mainland. With more cross-border railway projects nearing completion, connectivity within the Greater Bay Area will be further enhanced. This progress is built upon the mainland's robust capabilities and global leadership in railway development. Hong Kong will fully support the nation's railway policies and continue to work with mainland and global partners to advance railway development.
