Secretary for Sports Rosanna Law states on Saturday (Nov. 22) that Hong Kong has demonstrated its capability to host major international sports events, having co-hosted the National Games with Macao and Guangdong.

Her remarks followed praise from a former International Olympic Committee (IOC) president, who highlighted Hong Kong's world-class sports facilities and suggested that the Greater Bay Area (GBA) could be a strong contender for hosting the Olympics.

IOC honorary president for life Thomas Bach made these comments after touring Kai Tak Sports Park and attending the rugby sevens at the Games.

On a radio program, Law remarked that the decision for the GBA to pursue the Olympics would ultimately rest with the central government. However, she acknowledged the GBA's cities have significant potential.

"We certainly have the capability to host major competitions," Law emphasized, referencing the successful hosting of the equestrian events for the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

She noted, "The National Games proved that by collaborating with Guangdong and Macao, we can organize outstanding competitions. We should continue this cooperation to host more large-scale sports events."

Regarding support for the Hong Kong men's handball team in finding a long-term training facility, Law mentioned that the government is actively seeking venues for evening training sessions.

The handball team recently achieved its best result, finishing fourth in the National Games, with many members leaving full-time jobs or taking unpaid leave to compete.

Law noted that the administrators of Kai Tak Sports Park showed interest in collaborating with the handball team after hosting the sport during the National Games, which could include using Kai Tak Arena as their home stadium for training.

Given Hong Kong's limited land resources, Law emphasized the government's commitment to better utilize existing facilities.
