Hong Kong Maritime Week 2025, the annual flagship event for the global maritime and port industry, officially commenced today (Nov. 17). The week-long celebration features multiple highlight events, including the opening ceremony held this afternoon, the 2025 World Shipping Summit, and the Asian Logistics, Maritime and Aviation Conference. The second Global Maritime Trade Summit, hosted by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), was also held this morning, marking the beginning of Hong Kong Maritime Week 2025.
In her address, Secretary for Transport and Logistics, Ms. Mable Chan, stated that the return of the ICS to Hong Kong, gathering elite members of the shipping industry in this international maritime centre, stands as the best testament to Hong Kong's unique advantage of "backed by the motherland and connected to the world."
Ms. Chan noted that the summit facilitates high-level discussions on employing innovative strategies to address multifaceted challenges currently facing the global shipping industry, including geopolitical tensions, technological advancements, and green policies. She emphasized Hong Kong's commitment to enhancing the ecosystem of port services. Beyond world-class port facilities, Hong Kong is home to a cluster of over 1,200 port service entities, comprising top-tier ship management companies, major insurance associations, and leading financing institutions. Furthermore, the fleet flying the Hong Kong flag ranks among the largest in the world by total tonnage.
Ms. Chan also highlighted the government's active efforts to establish international partnerships, unlock new growth potential, and strengthen Hong Kong's role as a global "super-connector." The authorities are working to build "partner port" relationships with strategic ports in the Mainland and key regions involved in the Belt and Road Initiative, aiming to enhance mutual competitiveness and resilience.
She concluded by expressing gratitude to the ICS for hosting the summit during Hong Kong Maritime Week and looked forward to meeting again with the ICS soon to develop closer cooperative relations.
