Who says a "mermaid" has to be slender? At Jinan Sunac Ocean Park, there's a cheerful "Chubby Mermaid" weighing in at 130kg. To the beat of catchy music, the Mermaid wiggles his round belly, with his bouncy skin creating a wave-like effect. As the signs in his hand unroll, they humorously read: "No feeding, this fish is over the limit," and "I swear I volunteered for this job" … The audience then burst into laughter. The show video unexpectedly went viral online, receiving millions of likes on TikTok. One comment read, "'Chubby Koi!' Full of blessings!"
The "Chubby Mermaid" character is inspired by the "Chubby Koi fish" from Baotu Spring in Jinan. Wang Xinrui, the 23-year-old performer, is from Dalian, Liaoning. Originally a "low-key" aquarist, Wang never expected that a single dance would fascinate people, drawing countless visitors eager to see him in person. At first, Wang was hesitant. "After all, the 'Chubby Mermaid' doesn't exactly align with traditional mermaid standards." He remembered his first performance, when the crowd made him so nervous that he nearly lost his breath underwater. Later, he heard the cheers and laughter from them, and received comments on the show videos about how they helped fans relieve stress and relax. Wang smiles and says, "I guess this is exactly what our show is all about."
During the summer vacation, Wang performs at least four shows a day. On holidays, he adds extra night performances. In addition, he also tours other Sunac Ocean Parks across different cities, which takes a huge toll on his energy.
The performance takes place in a pool approximately 7 meters deep. For each 3-minute show, Wang dives up and down four times. "Each move is different; it's not as easy as it looks." He admits that, as a "heavyweight" character, the "Chubby Mermaid" faces greater resistance and buoyancy in the water, so he has to tie weights around his waist to sink properly. While hovering, he must control his breath to maintain neutral buoyancy, move energetically to engage the audience, and stay vigilant to avoid harming nearby marine life.
The "Chubby Mermaid" is beloved by the audience and has become the mascot and a unique IP of Jinan Sunac Ocean Park. You can spot the "Chubby Mermaid" "stepping ashore" at various events, such as dolls, signage, and meet-and-greets. While taking photos with the audience, playful kids love to poke his soft, chubby belly. The lovable figure will continue to bring joy to everyone in his own unique way.
