For the second year running (2024 and 2025), City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has been recognised as the world's most international university by Times Higher Education (THE), solidifying its appeal to top talents globally.
CityU offers Hong Kong's sole Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine programme, which is also the only one in Asia to hold dual accreditation from the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in the UK. This programme has reached a record-high proportion of international students this academic year, attracting individuals from Germany, Italy, South Africa, and beyond.
An exceptional student drawn to this programme is Jalal Abdullah Ali Abdulrahim from Jordan, who achieved a perfect score of 45 in the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma. He stated that the dual accreditation provides broader career options after graduation, enabling him to work worldwide and fulfil his ambition of contributing to conservation veterinary medicine.
Jordan's IB top scorer praises wide career choices
CityU's Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences has welcomed its most diverse international cohort yet for the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine program. New students hail from Germany, Italy, South Africa, Jordan, Malaysia, South Korea, Indonesia, and Mainland China.
Jalal Abdullah Ali Abdulrahim, the IB top scorer from Amman, Jordan, admitted that Hong Kong's hustle and bustle initially presented a significant cultural shock, making him apprehensive about adapting. However, he quickly found his balance and particularly appreciated the crucial support from CityU and the College. "CityU not only boasts advanced teaching facilities and a modern curriculum but also provides a forward-looking learning atmosphere," he said.
Another top achiever, who scored 5** in six subjects in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) examination, also chose CityU's veterinary medicine programme. He cited the programme's international recognition and flexible career pathways as his main reasons for enrolling.
Professor Vanessa Barrs, Dean of the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences, encouraged the new students to grow continuously with curiosity and compassion, aspiring to become world-class veterinarians, innovators, and scientists with global impact.
Since its inception in 2017, CityU's Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine program has made significant strides. In 2025, it debuted within the global top 100 for 'Veterinary Science' in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, underscoring its rising academic strength and international standing.
As one of CityU's ten flagship programmes, it offers substantial scholarships covering full or half tuition fees, accommodation, and a one-off overseas exchange grant of up to HK$500,000. Students enrolled in flagship programmes have opportunities for overseas exchanges at world-leading institutions, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Imperial College London, University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, Cornell University, University of Toronto, and Columbia University, thereby broadening their international perspectives and research experience to build a solid foundation for their future careers.
