All competition venues are now fully ready, Chief Secretary Eric Chan said on a press conference on the preparations for the National Games in Guangzhou today (Nov. 8). The authorities have formulated detailed security plans, crowd and traffic management arrangements, and contingency plans to ensure the smooth and safe execution of the events, he added.
Chan mentioned that the first two competition events in the Hong Kong area—beach volleyball and men's handball—kicked off on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, respectively. The events are currently in full swing, with 120 beach volleyball matches already completed.
Chan stated that these two events have been widely popular among citizens, with many purchasing tickets to attend, creating a very lively atmosphere on-site. The men's basketball under-22 (U-22) category will also commence the day after tomorrow. In total, over 630 athletes and technical officials have already arrived in Hong Kong for the three events.
Following tomorrow's opening ceremony, more competition events will gradually begin in Hong Kong. Chan said that citizens are encouraged to watch the games on-site, as this not only helps promote the development of sports in Hong Kong but also inspires public enthusiasm for participating in sports, creating more opportunities for engagement in high-level athletic activities in the city.
In response to media inquiries, Chan noted that the events will attract a large number of tourists to Hong Kong. He observed that some travel agencies have already launched tourism products covering Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao during the National Games period, effectively fostering the integrated development of sports and tourism and generating greater economic benefits.
He emphasized that by hosting the National Games, Hong Kong can not only demonstrate its capability to organize large-scale events but also further solidify its status as a capital for international spectacles, laying a solid foundation for attracting more top-tier sports events to Hong Kong in the future.
