Halloween should be the sweetest time of the year for children. But in the US, this "sweetness" is turning into a "fright" for parents' wallets!
A simple costume can easily cost US$60 or US$70. Many parents are just saying, "Crazy!"
So, who are the culprits?
According to The Independent, tariffs on Chinese goods have led to Halloween supply shortages and soaring costs. Prices naturally climbed higher.
The same steep price hikes apply to Halloween candy. CNN reports that Halloween candy prices are up 10.8% overall from last year. Popular choices, such as Tootsie Roll lollipops, have increased in price by a frightening 34%.
There's a new joke going around: "Porch lights will be off this year!"
Faced with high prices, Americans' DIY costume ideas are trending on TikTok. They opt for fruit snacks over expensive candy for a low-cost Halloween.
It looks like the real trick this Halloween is the rising price.
