Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee, who attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) informal leaders' meeting and related events in Gyeongju, South Korea, visited the Gyeongju Central Market with his team on the morning of Nov. 2. The visit aimed to experience the local atmosphere, and Lee shared breakfast with Gyeongju Mayor Joo Nak-young, congratulating him on hosting a successful summit.
Lee noted that Gyeongju, the host city of the APEC meeting, was once the capital and trade center of the Silla Dynasty and is renowned as a "museum without a roof." He also took the opportunity to visit the Gyeongju National Museum with his team, exploring the history and traditional culture of the ancient city through its artifacts. He emphasized that the APEC meeting has left a lasting imprint of connectivity among different economies.
Lee highlighted that the design of the 2025 APEC meeting logo in Korea features a dancing butterfly, symbolizing the ancient city's embrace of the world. He recalled that in his third-anniversary address, he similarly described Hong Kong's past year as "breaking out of a cocoon into a butterfly," reflecting a shared vision. Lee stated that in an era of rapid global development driven by artificial intelligence and innovative technology, the transition from old to new, from history to the future, and from governance to prosperity requires the courage to break barriers and soar. He expressed anticipation for next year's APEC meeting in Shenzhen, where economies will gather with greater connectivity, innovation, and prosperity.
