Ta Kung Pao reports, citing sources from AFP and BBC, regarding the major jewelry heist at the Louvre Museum in France, the Paris prosecutor's office stated on Oct. 30 that five additional suspects have been arrested, one of whom is a primary target of the investigation. Furthermore, two individuals arrested earlier have "partially admitted" their involvement in the robbery and have been formally charged. However, the stolen jewelry has not yet been recovered.
Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau revealed that one of the five newly arrested individuals is a main target of the investigation, as "his DNA evidence links him to the robbery." The other four "can provide information about the methods used in the crime." According to French media reports, these five suspects were arrested in different locations across Paris and its surrounding areas.
Beccuau also stated that the two suspects arrested earlier have "partially admitted" their involvement in the theft. They will face charges of "organized theft" and "criminal conspiracy," which carry maximum sentences of 15 years and 10 years imprisonment, respectively.
The report indicated that the two suspects are aged 34 and 39, both with previous criminal records for theft. The 34-year-old suspect is from Algeria and resides in France; he was arrested at an airport on the evening of Oct. 25 while attempting to board a flight to Algeria. The 39-year-old suspect, from the Seine-Saint-Denis department of France, was also arrested on the evening of Oct. 25.
Beccuau pointed out that there is currently no evidence to suggest the criminals received help from an "accomplice" inside the museum. However, she did not rule out the possibility that the criminal gang is significantly larger than the four perpetrators captured on surveillance footage. She also stated that the stolen jewelry has not been recovered and warned that "any buyer will become an accomplice for handling stolen goods," adding, "It's not too late to return them now."
