Following the shocking "Nth Room" case, South Korea is now grappling with a new wave of AI-driven exploitation, dubbed "Nth Room 2.0" by the media. According to reports from South Korean outlets, a website called "PlayX" (phonetic translation) has emerged, where users exploit AI technology to create "nude figurines" using photos of women they know.
The website has already garnered an alarming average of over 100,000 daily visits, with monthly active users reaching approximately 520,000 and peak concurrent users hitting 4,400. Every day, dozens of sexually exploitative videos are uploaded to the platform.
Shockingly, the website imposes almost no access restrictions. Anyone with proof of being over 18 years old can freely access its content.
Users on the platform actively share techniques for creating these AI-generated images and even compete to see whose "figurines" are more realistic or detailed.
Requests for invitations to join the platform have proliferated on male-dominated online communities such as DC Inside and Bobaedream.
Ironically, the website's popularity has surged since South Korea implemented the bill that punishes those who watch or possess sexually explicit deepfakes in September last year. Before the law's enforcement, the platform reportedly drew around 60,000 daily visits. However, its traffic has since skyrocketed by 60%, reaching 520,000 monthly visitors by April-May this year.
Despite 72 civic groups issuing a joint condemnation of the website last year, South Korean regulatory authorities have remained silent, taking no meaningful action to address the platform's operations.
