Starting this Saturday (Nov. 1), children under the age of 8 must use child restraint devices, such as child safety seats, when traveling in private vehicles in Hong Kong (unless they reach a body height of 1.35m).
The Transport Department (TD) highlighted that the proportion of traffic accidents involving children under 8 in private cars increased from approximately 43% in 2021 to around 60% last year.
Child restraint devices have been proven to significantly reduce the risk of injury or death in head-on collisions by about 70%. Many cities and countries, including Shanghai, Shenzhen, the European Union, Japan, and Singapore, have implemented similar requirements.
The TD also advised parents to select restraint devices that are suitable for their child's height and weight and to ensure the products meet national or international safety standards.
