Actor Hui Siu-hung, affectionately known as "Brother Benz," passed away in the early hours of today (Oct. 28) due to multiple organ failure caused by cancer.
Hui came from a prominent background. According to public records, he belonged to the prestigious Hui family of Guangzhou, often regarded as "modern Guangzhou's first family." His ancestor Xu Baiting was the leading salt merchant in Guangzhou. His great-grandfather, Xu Yingkui, served as a high-ranking official and Viceroy of Min-Zhe, and was even a godson of Empress Dowager Cixi, granted the privilege of riding a horse within the imperial palace. Hui's grandaunt was Guangping Xu, the wife of the modern Chinese writer Lu Xun. Thanks to his father's gold trading business, Hui enjoyed a comfortable upbringing.
Hui began his career in 1971 by enrolling in the first TVB artists training class. Though he often played supporting roles on screen, he was widely known in the industry as a "hidden tycoon." In 2018, after his contract with TVB ended, he opted for semi-retirement and spent over HK$23 million to purchase a 4,000-square-foot luxury home in Singapore, where he relocated. Since then, he has frequently traveled between Singapore, Hong Kong, and mainland China, living a prosperous life.
Hui married in 1992, and his wife gave birth to their beloved daughter, Charmaine Hui, at the age of 49. Having become a father later in life, Hui cherished his family deeply. He once provided HK$7 million to support his daughter's entrepreneurial ventures, helping her open several cafes and bakeries in Singapore. He was also known for his devotion to his family, often collaborating with his daughter on YouTube videos even during his semi-retirement. Their heartwarming and playful interactions in these videos showcased their close bond.
